A Visit to William Storms’ Studio in Brooklyn
After What’s New What’s Next in September, I had the chance to visit William Storms’ new studio in Industry City, Brooklyn.

The studio officially opened on Saturday, September 21st, as part of New York Textile Month. William is a talented and charming weaver, and his modern approach to passementerie makes his work truly stand out. I first met him a few years ago at a party hosted by Samuel and Sons, and it’s been a joy to watch his career grow ever since.

William’s studio, nestled within The Makers Guild—a hybrid retail and makers space in Industry City—is a dream for anyone who loves textiles. It’s filled with natural light, rows of yarns, spinning machines, and looms, plus examples of his dimensional, handwoven art pieces. He specializes in creating custom, large-scale woven artworks, including wall hangings and room dividers, as well as decorative pieces like pillows and even lighting. He also takes commissions for small-batch upholstery fabrics. Each piece is meticulously crafted with a blend of artistry and precision.

Cigarettes and bullets!
One thing I love about William’s work is his penchant for incorporating unusual elements into his pieces, an approach that demonstrates his wit, creativity, and even a touch of subversiveness. He’s woven everything from discarded iPhone charging cables and cigarettes to selenite crystals and even bullets into his work. When creating bespoke projects, he enjoys connecting with clients to suggest these unique materials, adding a personal touch to each piece. Before starting a full-scale project, he’ll weave small samples for approval, ensuring that the final product reflects the client’s vision.

What’s especially fun about William’s space is that it goes beyond just showcasing his finished pieces. He also has on-site yarn twisting machines where he makes textural bouclés and novelty yarns that are available for purchase. If you’re a maker, you can even join one of his craft and crochet workshops—something I’d love to do if I lived closer!

William and Saana
William’s journey into weaving began in 2011 when he launched his bespoke textile studio in Brooklyn. His background includes designing for industrial-scale mills and custom handweaving for the interior design trade. Today, he continues to bridge the gap between craft and custom manufacturing, always with a keen eye for detail and a passion for the loom.
