A Feature on the Eiseman Color Blog!

Many thanks to master colorist Leatrice Eiseman for featuring me on her Color Blog; what an honor! Leatrice is the founder of the Pantone Color Institute, and is an internationally recognized color guru, author, and educator.  It was a pleasure to share some of my process on how I build palettes and create cohesive textile collections with my clients.

Last July I had the wonderful experience of attending one of her multi-day color trainings, on scenic Bainbridge Island just off the coast of Seattle. As a colorist and trend maven working in many areas of industry, she shared a wealth of information on color systems, trend reports, and how color affects buying choices. My favorite learnings were in-depth reviews of the psychology and meaning of color, covered in one of Leatrice’s books.

The course was full, with students coming from all over the world, and industries from health care to fashion. It was a pleasure to be surrounded with interesting professionals who were all passionate about color. Rami Kim, a colorist and teacher from Seoul, had a large group of her students in attendance, and did an inspiring demo of super-fast color matching for us.

Looking back at the course and my copious notes, my biggest “thank you” to Leatrice is for her wisdom about personal preferences in color. She urges her students to delve into the origins of our feelings for particular colors, and learn to put personal taste aside so that we can make the best recommendations to our clients. For me, a childhood adoration for pink turned into a serious dislike in my adult years. Thinking about my perceptions of pink (insipid, girlish, unsophisticated) has helped me learn to love this very trendy color—even the hotter shades. Though, to be honest, it might have something to do with sipping rose on a warm summer evening!

What about you? And old favorite colors that you can’t stand anymore? Have you learned to embrace a client’s preferred shade, even if it had not previously been on your A-list?
