Surface Design Trends: The Best of 2020, Influencing 2021

We had so much fun putting together our Best of 2020 and Influences for 2021 that we wanted to share a few of the most inspiring themes with you.

Escape to Nature

Florals are always a mainstay, and as the pandemic has progressed, the importance of nature (as a daily salve or far-off dream) has continued to grow. This deepening interest will challenge designers to re-invent a mainstay. Fanciful renderings of night-blooming gardens will invite us to leave our cares behind. Bohemian ease will infuse naturalness into textured florals, and naive ditsy allovers will charm. Stylized Art Nouveau will join Arts and Crafts influences to infuse products with traditional appeal.

Layered Coziness

Coziness has become such an obsession that we are borrowing words like the Danish hygge and the Swedish mys to describe its nuances. This trend will continue as we seek warmth and reassurance, with hefty bouclés, rich cords and exaggerated piles at center. Fabrics must feel as good as they look: soft hand and napped finishes will convey contentment and restfulness. Natural (and natural-look) fibers will tell a story of easy-going comfort. While single-color textures will always be classic, a sense of joy comes in with Technicolor textures in multi-colored effects.
